Gastroparesis with CBD take the fright

Vomiting, nausea and feeling full, even if you have eaten very little? these can be signs that you suffer from a condition known as gastroparesis, a rare disorder that prevents the stomach from emptying properly, leading to a whole range of gastrointestinal problems.

Symptoms of gastroparesis

doctors are not always sure why patients develop gastroparesis. it is believed that in most cases it is caused by damage to the vagus nerve, which controls the movement of muscles in the stomach. it is the responsibility of the vagus nerve to signal the muscles to contract and push food into the small intestine. if the nerve is damaged, food stays in the stomach longer than normal.

If the intestine is sluggish

The most common way that patients develop an injury to the vagus that leads to gastroparesis is through disease, infection or surgery in that area of the body:

  • Vomiting and nausea
  • feel full too soon or lose your appetite
  • Bloating and pain in the abdomen
  • Changes in sugar content
  • Weight loss and malnutrition

unfortunately, there is no cure for gastroparesis. patients suffering from this disease have to struggle with symptoms for years and it can even be a lifelong condition. the disorder can lead to other serious complications, including a reduced quality of life. although some medications help relieve the symptoms, cannabidiol (CBD) may be exactly the treatment that gastroparesis patients need.

Study CBD and gastroparesis

In a study, U.S. scientists have shown a positive effect of cannabis and CBD products in severe gastrointestinal diseases such as gastroparesis, and since there is no really promising treatment for gastroparesis, the scientists regard the results of their current study as a major breakthrough for medicine.

The scientists involved in the study work at the gastroenterology departments of Bridgeport Hospital Connecticut, Westchester Medical Center New York, Cleveland Clinic and New York Medical College. 24 subjects with therapy-resistant gastroparesis were treated with cannabis flowers, dronabinol or CBD products such as CBD oil over a period of 60 days.

As the scientists write in the renowned Cureus Journal of Medical Science, all treatment approaches have produced promising results and have brought about a significant alleviation of symptoms and a significant increase in the patients' well-being.
